Feb 8, 2022 update: After using this lock for all of three weeks around town, the cable was cut and my bike stolen right in front of my gym—while I was on a treadmill in view of my bike! That's how quickly and easily the cable was cut, literally in the blink of an eye. If you live in a respectible town that's not overrun by homeless who are catered to by the government and ignored by the police, then a cable like this might be ok for you. But if you live in a place with high crime like the San Francisco Bay Area then you should absolutely buy a decent U-Lock.Original review:We all know all these cable locks can be relatively easy to cut with beefy cable cutters, but no one buys these kinds of cable locks for ultimate security. That said, the Bell Watchdog 610 Combination Lock definitely looks substantial.BUT the cable is manufactured in a tight spiral, so while it's easy to carry, it's a bit of a challenge to pull straight enough to actually lock your bike and wheels. It's 6 feet long, but it's impossible to pull to it's full length, so effectively it's about 5 usable feet.More importantly, the combination numbers are a real struggle to turn. Not like "they're new and need to wear in", but more like they aren't made well and "am I going to be able to get it open when I come out of the grocery store?"I have this and the thicker 10mm version of the Bell Watchdog cable lock. Just today my thicker cable lock was cut and bike stolen in seconds. I know this because I was watching my bike through the glass wall from inside my gym and must have turned my head or changed the song playing on phone and poof! the bike was gone.So if there's any chance—any chance at all—someone may want to steal your bike, and you don't want your bike stolen, then you should buy a decent U-Lock. Those at least require a few minutes to break open and so are a bit of a deterrent. Unlike this easily cut cable lock. The material itself isn’t very strong and I felt like it could easily be cut through with just the big simple gardening scissors. But what was most disappointing aspect of this lock was the locking itself. The numbers got stuck and after I was able to free them, even the right code wouldn’t let it loose. So I had to giant scissors to cut through it and free my bike.I live in SF so looking for a versatile lock that can help keep my bike safe. Because I've got a relatively old mountain bike, I'm not looking to spend $50-$100 on a lock. After a few months of using this lock, it does the trick.1. It stays in place around the frame of my bike. I don't need a holder for this, I just store it on the bike.2. It looks thicker and tougher than most other combination locks3. It's long enough to get around the front wheel and through the frame on most city obstacles.4. I don't have to carry an extra keyI wouldn't leave my bike outside overnight in SF (or anywhere where stolen bikes do huge trade), but for a few minutes to a couple of hours I've never had any problems with this lock. It's well designed, compact, and worth the price of admission.Bought two of these for kids' bikes at school. These are sturdy and seem very durable, No scratches or blemishes on these after about a month of use. Sliding the lock pieces on and off is also easy. Number dials are also easy to rotate. The only complaint I hear is that it needs a lot of strength to pull the two ends around the bar/support to lock on to. My younger one is 7 and not able to do it easily. I tried stretching this out to help him out a little, but the build is so durable that it has made no difference. So you may want to reconsider if buying for young ones.Could be a little thickerSo this product might be ok for some applications, but not mine. I bought it to lock a gate. It is outside, in the weather, all the time. After 1 week the light stopped working. In trying to fix it, I discovered that the 2 screws that hold the light switch were already rusted. I got it apart and discovered two small watch batteries, which when tested were dead. I replaced them, at $4.00 apiece and we'll see. Not useful for me without a lighted dial. Locking mechanism seems to be working OK. After a month or 2, I expect the screws will be rusted in for good.Standard bike lock. Good price. No complaints.
